WOLE SOYINKA is Professor of Comparative Literature at the University of Ife, Nigeria. His plays include The Road (seen at Theatre Royal, Stratford in 1965), The Lion and the Jewel (staged at London ‘s Royal Court in 1966), Camwood on the Leaves, Kongi’s Harvest, Madmen and Specialists, and the Jero Plays. His version of The Bacchae of Euripides was commissioned and performed by the National Theatre, London in 1973. He received an Arts Council John Whiting Award for 1966/7 and was Overseas Fellow at Churchill College, Cambridge, in 1973/4, where he wrote Death and the King’s Horseman. His ‘Fantasia on an Arninian theme, A Play of Giants was first published and staged in 1984. He is also a distinguished poet, novelist and theatre director, whose autobiography, Ake, The Years of Childhood was published in 1981.
