Description
It tells the story of Gugu, a girl entering womanhood who undergoes life turmoil due to the anger and hunger for power of men in a small African village.
During the process, Gugu leaves her village and experiences a new place and some family members she’s never met before. Ultimately landing back at her village, we see how her family and Gugu, and the powers-that-be handle a moral and societal conflict. It’s a rewarding story whose outcome is hopefully more truth than fiction in Africa.
At times, the male author seems to fall back on a more male rite of passage in Gugu’s quest than what might be likely to happen in a close-knit village community where a circle of women young and old might have circled the wagons, nurtured, and protected Gugu’s place in the group.
However, it’s rare to find such a compelling treatise on how people lie in small ways to get their way and how it tears relationships and trust, and then the lie is found out.
