The Search, Chukwuemeka Ike’s ninth novel, revolves around the re-actions of select Nigerians to the news of another military coupd’etat. the central character, Ola, rejected attractive job offers from Southern universities for a less attractive job in Bauchi, and married a Berom, Kaneng, in an effort to cultivate the Northern power brokers. As his dream-world crumbles, he receives a surprising offer of a key appointment in the new military government. Is this a bait? Or the opportunity he has worked for all his life? Within a time span of only 22 hours, the author beams the searchlight on the ill-fated voyage of the Nigerian ship of state, launched on October 1, 1960 full of resources, hope and promise and proposes a change of direction if the search for a viable political culture is to succeed. Chukwuemeka Ike was an Assistant Registrar, University of Ibadan and later Registrar, University of Nigeria, Nsukka between 1963 and 1971. He moved to The West African Examinations Council where he was for nine years its Registrar and Chief Executive. He voluntarily retired from the public service in 1979, to become a full-time writer. He is at present the Chairman of Nigerian Book Foundation.
