In an effort to produce more African YA fiction, the Afro Young Adult project was started in September 2018. 435 submissions from 28 different nations were the result of the call for applications.

The final stories were chosen through workshops conducted by panels made up of authors, literary activists, and young adult readers from all over the continent in a variety of African cities.
