Description
Bishop Hassan Kukah is well known in Nigeria and beyond as a sharp-minded public commentator, analyst, and activist, with volumes of publications to his name. But to my mind, this latest publication, with the powerful title “God is Love”, which is also his episcopal motto, is not just one more Kukah piece, but a Kukah publication of a special character. It is a collection of some of his regular messages for the church celebrations of Christmas, Lent, and Easter. These are the highest points of our Church calendar of religious celebrations called the liturgical year. They are not just any speeches made in public gatherings or state occasions. They are messages delivered from the pulpit of the Cathedral of Sokoto, in his capacity as the Chief Shepherd of the Flock of Christ in that ecclesiastical jurisdiction, as the leader of the community of the faithful and the authentic and authoritative bearer of the message of God for all the people. It is like the oracles of the ancient prophets about whom we read in the bible. Their prophetic utterances were usually short, sharp, and piercing delivered directly without diplomatic nuances…Each time, he captures the mood of the nation in the light of the spiritual content and meaning of the ongoing religious season John Cardinal Onaiyekan, Archbishop Emeritus of Abuja Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah is the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, Nigeria. After his episcopal ordination, he has served in different capacities as Chairman, of the Committee on Inter-religious Dialogue, Catholic Bishops’ Conference, Nigeria (2012-present); member, of Pontifical Council for Inter-religious Dialogue, Vatican City (2012-present); Chairman, of Committee on Inter-religious Dialogue, Regional Episcopal Conference of West African, RECOWA (2012-present). On 11th December 2020, the Holy Father appointed Bishop Kukah as a member of the Dicastery for the Promotion of Human Integral Development
