1. Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu was a Lt Colonel in the Nigerian Army who became Military Governor of Eastern Nigeria. He declared the region the Republic of Biafra on May 30, 1967. As Biafra was collapsing, he fled into exile in the Ivory Coast. He died on November 26, 2011.

2. Yakubu Gowon was a General and head of the Federal Military Government of Nigeria. His government started the war on July 6, 1967 to bring Eastern Nigeria back
to Nigeria. Biafra surrendered on January 12, 1970 bringing an end to Biafra as an independent Republic.

3. Philip Effiong was a Lt Colonel in the Nigerian Army before the outbreak of the war. In Biafra, Effiong was designated Chief of General Staff who was asked to administer Biafra as Ojukwu went “in search of peace”. He surrendered to the Federal Government of Nigeria on January 12, 1970 thus bringing the war to an end. He died a few years ago.

4. Dan Agbese had been Editor of several publications including The Nigeria Standard in Jos, and The New Nigerian in Kaduna. He was also General Manager of Benue Radio. He was the Editor-in-Chief of Newswatch, a magazine he co-founded. He is an author of several books.

5. Yakubu Mohammed was Managing Editor of the New Nigerian and Editor of the National Concord before co-founding Newswatch.

6. Soji Akinrinade had been Deputy Editor of the Punch and Assistant Editor of the Sunday Concord. He joined Newswatch as an Associate Editor and rose to the position of Executive Director and Editor in Chief.

7. Ebere Onwudiwe, a Professor of Political Science and former Director of African Studies Centre at the Central State University, Wilberforce, Ohio, USA, is an author of several books.

8. Ray Ekpu had been Editor of the Nigerian Chronicle, Sunday Times, Business Times and Chairman of the Editorial Board of the Concord before co-founding Newswatch. He had also been the magazine’s Editor in Chief and Chief Executive. bne on grignred
